New Year Crash Dieting Can Lead to Osteoporosis

Thousands of women are putting their health at risk each New Year as the healthy eating season kicks off. Cutting out dairy products from the diet can cause serious health repercussions as a result of reduced calcium intake. It is estimated that 1 in 3 women in the UK develop Osteoporosis as a direct result of calcium deficiency.

Top Nutritional Consultant, Michael van Straten commented: "Each year I get more anxious about young women who decide to start their New Year with the latest crazy diet fad. None of them work and some can have catastrophic after effects. The most serious risk is the early start of osteoporosis - brittle bones. Avoiding dairy foods is a popular, but misguided way of reducing calories, as it also reduces the consumption of bone-building calcium. I see women in their late twenties and early thirties who have a bone age ten years older than they are. It's a disaster waiting to happen and is even more of a risk in older women just before, during and after the menopause ."

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become fragile and susceptible to break easily. To combat Osteoporosis a healthy, well-balanced diet is recommended which is rich in calcium. The best sources of calcium are milk and dairy products such as cheese and yoghurt.

In addition to these important health benefits, an American study* has recently revealed that young women who consumed more than three portions of dairy products per day burned off more fat and calories from their meals than people who consumed a low dairy diet.

The National Osteoporosis Society states that the recommended daily intake of calcium is 700mg for an adult. At 160mg per 200g pot, TOTAL Greek Yoghurt provides almost a quarter of the recommendation. TOTAL Greek Yoghurt has teamed up with Michael van Straten to produce a week long Superfoods healthy eating plan, new for 2006.
